Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock that is fitted to casement windows like uPVC and double glazing made of wood. Cockspur

Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle closes and turns onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable versions. They come in a range of different nose heights to suit the frame.

The handle is secured with the small triangle-shaped spur (spur) that is attached to the frame. They are typically one-way handles however a deadlock lock cylinder that locks can be fitted for additional security.

The replacement handles for cockspurs are easy to install. All you require is the correct backset as well as a new set (supplied). The backset is the distance that runs from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. Tilt and turn

Tilt and turn windows are a premium European window style that has been in use for decades in Europe however, it is only getting noticed stateside. The windows combine the functionality of 3 window pane replacement styles - tilt, in-swing, and pivot. They are great for older homes because they provide more ventilation than standard windows.

When in the closed position tilt and turn windows lock as a normal fixed window. However, by turning the handle 90@ or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened upwards and the window will tilt into allowing air to circulate through the space at the top of the frame. This is a great option to let air circulate without the need to open a large windows, which could pose a safety risk if not properly secured when opening.

If the handle is turned 90or 180 degrees, the sash can be fully opened like a door. This allows for complete air exchange which is especially beneficial in rooms with a lot of draft or where smoke or other odors can accumulate. This makes it easier to clean the outside of the glass since you can do it from inside your home. This is a job which often requires precarious steps.

Tilt-and-turn windows are also secure. When they are locked in the closed position they are difficult to open from outside, and they come with double seals that prevent rainwater from entering the house when in the tilted or in-swing position. This can be a particularly useful feature for older homes, where intruders are more likely to target windows that are opened using the side hinges.

Spade
