Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine upscales compressed audio to a near-hi-res format. They also work with Sony's LDAC technology, which streams higher-bitrate audio via Bluetooth (although not as high-quality as the headphone DAC that's dedicated).

2. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

Bowers & Wilkins flagship headphones which is the PX7 S2 have always been on the top lists of wireless headsets since the launch of the first-generation PX7, in 2015. This puts them in the same class as Sony WH1000XM5 or Bose's QuietComfort. The PX7 S2 is the latest version that takes the first generation of headphones up a notch with improved ANC performance as well as a new appearance.

In the earcups, the 40mm bio cellulose drivers are angled to point straight at your eardrums, delivering an audio experience that's more intimate than other closed-back headphones can manage. It's a bold claim however, one that the PX7 S2 is able to deliver on. Vocals are clear and clear and bass is a deep and rumbly when you need it to be.

The PX7 S2 also performs very well when it comes to voice calls, with clear and crisp sound that doesn't muddle your own voice. They also provide a fast charge that gets you back to full power in just two hours. They're also compatible with hi-res audio, thanks to an aptX adaptive Bluetooth codec that allows the playback of 24-bit music.

For most listeners the most significant upgrade is the enhanced noise-canceling and audio quality. In our tests the PX7 S2 eliminated nearly all of our simulated cabin noise with astonishing efficiency and also performed well when we played Mozart's Et In Carnatus Est and Sanctus from his Grosse Messe, demonstrating excellent insight into the dynamic shifts between the solo voice, the wind trio and orchestral accompaniment.

For audiophiles who value high-quality sound and are looking for an exceptional wireless noise-canceling headset, the Focal Bathys are hard to beat. They're the French audio company's very first ANC headphones to use Bluetooth and offer amazing audio quality in both Bluetooth mode and when connected to a device via USB for true hi-fi listening with up to 24-bit/192kHz (the headphone is also capable of blocking external sound through its closed ear cups).

The Bathys are stunning with their glossy finishes and swooping curvatures similar to Focal's closed-back Celestee and open-back Elear headphones. The Bathys are built with top-quality materials like magnesium and aluminum that make them feel durable, comfortable, and well worth the price.

The Bathys Bluetooth headphones deliver an impressive, clear sound quality. They easily surpass consumer ANC models of the same price like the Sony XM5/5 or Bose QC45. They can be pushed even further by using direct DAC audio mode, making them a bona fide option for serious hi-fi enthusiasts.

The Focal &Naim app allows users to adjust the headphone's playback controls and Bluetooth pairing preferences. The app lets users choose between soft and silent intensities for ANC. Users can also alter the brightness of the LEDs that are on the earcups of the headphones, and tweak EQ settings. The app is fairly bare-bones but has enough features to be worth the cost.

The only issue is the active noise cancellation, which doesn't live up to the quality of the competition. The headphone doesn't block out all ambient noise like the most rated XM5 or AirPods Max, and its Treble accuracy is subpar with a muffled mid to high range that detracts from the sound of instruments and vocals.

The Focal Bathys headphones aren't very portable. They are not suitable for travel because their ear cups do not fold, and they weigh more than other models. They're best suited to a home environment where they can be used for lengthy listening sessions or as an audio reference headphone for engineering purposes. Despite their size and bulk, the Bathys are surprisingly comfortable to wear for prolonged periods of time.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WH-CH720N headphones are excellent wireless over ear headphones for the money. The noise-cancelling technology is great and helps to reduce the background noise. They are perfect for those who commute or travel. They also have a nice high-end look with their robust construction and attractive matte finish.

They have a similar design as Sony's more recent 1000X and XB910N headphones. They sport a slim, plastic headband that has the typical hinges for the earcups. They are light and comfortable, however they're a bit compressed for me. In the box, they come with an USB-C port to charge and an 3.5mm socket and a decent length cable. They allow multipoint Bluetooth pairing, meaning you can connect them to two devices at the same time should you choose to.

In my tests, the CH720N's hybrid technology for noise cancellation did an excellent job at reducing ambient noise. There were only a few noticeable glitches while walking around Waterloo Station and London Victoria. These weren't magical sound-silencers which destroyed every sound in the vicinity, however, and they struggled with low-frequency noises like the rumbling engine noises of trains and buses.

Streaming music through the CH720N's Bluetooth connection was smooth and showed a low amount of harmonic distortion. I tested a range of genres and found they could handle the intricate interplay among instruments very well. It did a great job of controlling the bass in rock tracks and keeping the mix focused.

I like the fact that you can adjust the Sony Headphones Connect app to customize the CH720N's ANC and multipoint connectivity settings to your liking, as well as include a variety of audio presets. You can also utilize the app to activate DSEE which can boost the quality of compressed content and enhances its audio quality.

The WH-CH720N is a good value for PS130. It lacks some of Sony's most popular features (such as Speak-toChat and Quick Attention) however, it does come with many amazing features. 360 Reality Audio, smart controls, and DSEE upscaling are all present. The only thing not available is LDAC Bluetooth High-Res Audio Support which I believe would have been a welcome inclusion.
